George Boole was Irish, I believe, but Ireland was a UK colony at the
time, so maybe Martin thinks we have a more direct line to his thoughts?

I feel sure, however, that the indefatigable legislators of the European
Parliament in Strasbourg will have harmonised this by now - hardly
anything else has escaped their touch.  If not, and we have to settle this
democratically, I think I'll cast my vote for the Strasbourg manifesto,
rather than the Edinburgh one.
