Thank you Mark for your strenuous defense of simplicity.

(a) As you point out, the function of the ID tags can be done a  
different way. I hear people inventing reasons for it, not breaking  
down the doors with their demands.

(b) VOTable was originally close to FITS binary table. The addition  
of ID tags in the table elements will pull it further from that ideal.

(c) The ID tags mean the the simple binary representaiton no longer  
works.

(d) It adds a burden on developers. Perhaps that time would be better  
spent making the VO robust and trustworthy and usable?

(e) Last but not least, is the experiences from the NVBO summer  
school. They said over and over that the VO is too complicated and  
too much jargon and not enough astronomy. Adding these ID tags (IMHO)  
simply creates a need for another 5 minutes teaching time for  
technology and consequently 5 minutes less on astronomy.

Lets keep it lean and mean and get back to astronomy
