From mark.allen at astro.unistra.fr Thu Sep 8 01:02:04 2011 From: mark.allen at astro.unistra.fr (Mark Allen) Date: Thu, 8 Sep 2011 10:02:04 +0200 Subject: Call for contributions to the next IVOA newsletter Message-ID: <6EBEDD1F-6256-4BD8-B1C1-1244896C43E6@astro.unistra.fr> Dear all, We would like to call for contributions to the next (7th) issue of the IVOA newsletter that we intend to publish mid October around the time of the Pune interop meeting. The IVOA newsletter aims to bring the latest news about Virtual Observatory applications to astronomers by drawing upon developments throughout the international VO community and the national projects linked by the IVOA. It is composed of short (~100 word) articles highlighting new VO capabilities, together with a list of recent papers and upcoming events. Articles are to be submitted to ivoa-news-editors at ivoa.net by September 30. Contributors are requested to use the same brief format for articles as used in the previous issues (http://www.ivoa.net/newsletter). This is a short text highlighting a new application or feature, with a single small image (that may expand to a larger one via a link) and a URL for more information. Remember that the audience is the general astronomy scientific community so VO jargon must be minimised, and usefulness to astronomers maximised! Articles will be chosen and edited by the Newsletter Editors. We hope to be as inclusive as possible, and the newsletter will be checked by an oversight committee prior to release. best regards, Mark Allen, on behalf of the IVOA newsletter editors -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are planning three Apps sessions. Submissions are invited from people who wish to present work on desktop, web, or other applications relevant to the Virtual Obervatory, particularly those which make use of IVOA standards. A primary focus of these sessions is to provide feedback to those working on the standards. Presentations may include software demonstrations, and are usually allocated a limit of about 15 minutes including questions, though this will depend on the number of submissions. Since SAMP v1.3 is approaching Recommendation status, presentations related to the SAMP Web Profile, especially demonstrating its use in production or experimental web applications, are especially encouraged. If you wish to give a talk, please let me have a provisional title, author list, and summary. The calculator is published as a downloadable *.apk file which can be installed on any Android device. This calculator allows the user to input user-selected values of the Hubble constant, Omega(matter), Omega(vacuum) and the redshift (z), and returns the current age of the Universe, the co-moving radial distance (and volume) and the angular-size distance at the specified redshift, as well as the scale (kpc/arcsec) and the luminosity distance. It allows the user the choice between open (Omega(vacuum)=0 ), flat (Omega(total)=1.0) or a "general" (arbitrary combination of Omega(matter) and Omega(vacuum)) universe. This calculator has been adapted from Ned Wright's Cosmology Calculator [http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~wright/CosmoCalc.html]. The release *.zip file(including the *.apk file) is available for download at: http://vo.iucaa.ernet.in/~voi/voandroidcc.htm Features of the android application include: - Calculator runs on Android device locally (one time installation). - It calculates various cosmological parameters. - The calculator supports Flat, Open as well as General (arbitrary combination of Omega(matter) and Omega(vacuum)) types of Universe. Complete change log is available at: http://vo.iucaa.ernet.in/~voi/Android-Cosmo-Cal-ChangeLog.html Please send your suggestions and comments at voindia at vo.iucaa.ernet.in.
