UCDs status and perspectives

Dear UCD list,
Following the discussion of last week, I append below some notes
on a controlled vocabulary related to UCDs that I sent to Sebastien
some time ago. It represents a more radical change than most people are
probably ready to go for, but I think it may be relevant to the current
discussion.
- Jonathan McDowell
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been thinking a lot this week about UCDs and their possible
role in VO data models. My conclusion is that while the present design
of UCDs is very useful for the catalog cross matching problem, we need
a somewhat more flexible data dictionary to handle the data analysis
problem. I think we need both kinds of dictionary, with of course
a mapping between the two for the applications that need the appropriate
ones.
Specifically, I propose to parallel the UCDs with PCDs (Parameterized
Content Descriptors). These differ from UCDs in that they can include
functional parameters. For instance the two UCDs PHOT_FLUX_RADIO_1.4G
and PHOT_FLUX_RADIO_1.6G would map to a single PCD
PHOT_FLUX(PHOT_BAND_ID) with PHOT_BAND_ID taking the values 1.4 GHz and
1.6 GHz. This reflects the fact that PHOT_FLUX_RADIO_1.4G and
PHOT_FLUX_RADIO_1.6G do not really describe fundamentally different
physical quantities. The PCD also differ from UCD in that they are
organized to form the bottom level attributes of a structured data
model for astronomy, so the top level domains are different from the
UCDs.
So far my proposed main PCD fields are
(1) about the universe
PHYS Physical data which is true generally and not a property of a
specific astronomical location or object.
POP Properties of a population of astronomical objects
SAMPLE Properties of a sample of sources.
OBJ The things we study are astronomical objects in space
(with more or less defined boundaries).
MED To understand the physics of these objects we describe the physical
medium constituting them, including matter (solid, liquid, gas, plasma),
radiation, and electromagnetic, gravitational and other fields.
LOS A direction on the sky we observe corresponds to a line of sight
along which objects may lie.
(2) about our observations of the universe
SRC When we have a dataset, we can identify a subset of that dataset
as a source, which we can identify with an object.
PCDs are SRC when they are to do with the direct measurements of an
object with a telescope,
and OBJ when they are to do with the intrinsic properties of the
object (in its rest frame, without LOS effects etc).
BKG A special sort of source we call the background
OBS We have to describe things to do with the observing instrument,
configuration and conditions.
(a major subset is OBS_COV_ which )
SURVEY_ A group of observations
SRC_PHOT We measure the absolute intensity of radiation from the sky
SRC_SPEC Like PHOT, but dealing with many photon energies at once?
EVENT A detected photon or background event
_POS Information about positions (also OBJ_POS etc)
_TIME Information about times (also in OBS_COV_TIME...?)
(3) about our analysis of the observations
DATA We also need to describe things about the datasets themselves.
REFER Bibliographic info
Below I give my first attempt at mapping the UCDs to a data model
oriented set of PCDs. There are quite a few UCDs that I still have to
understand by looking at their actual use in catalogs, so this is only a
sketch and some are left blank. At the end I give the beginnings of
extra UCD/PCD names needed for X-ray astronomy datasets.
Appendix 1: A possible list of PCDs to be the data model equivalent of UCDs.
Given in UCD alphabetical order.
