Introduction
Definition: The IVOA Registry will allow an astronomer to be able to locate, get details of, and make use of, any resource located anywhere in the IVO space, ie in any Virtual Observatory. The IVOA will define the protocols and standards whereby different registry services are able to interoperate and thereby realise this goal.
How We Operate and How to Join
We try to maintain a
roadmap for our activities which is generally updated at each
IVOA Interoperability Meeting which occur twice per year. Then we work through the roadmap, using the
registry mailing list as our primary discussion forum.
The most important output of the working group are the
specification documents that govern how IVOA registries operate and which are submitted to the
IVOA standardization process. Some members take an active role in writing these documents, while others review the documents and make comments. When a document is fairly advanced, discussion of the document will migrate to this Twiki site on specialized pages (that can be found by following the links under the
Specifications).
The most
useful output of this group are the actual implementations of the specifications. Examples of actual registries that can be used by users and applications appear under the
Projects section below. One can often find links to useful software and utilities from the related specification pages.
All interested are welcome to participate in any of the above activities. Here are some things you can do to "join" the working group (listed roughly from easiest to hardest):
- Subscribe to the registry mailing list and participate in the discussion.
- Create a TWiki Login for yourself so that you provide comments on specification documents. (See the TWikiTutorial to learn how to edit pages.) Add yourself to the working group membership list.
- Make text contributions to ongoing specification document authoring, or volunteer to take up editorship of a new spec.
- Get involved in a registry-related application development project. This might either be an implementation of a registry itself or an application that uses registries.
Participants
Membership of this working group is informal as people and projects come and go. See above for information on how to 'join' the working group.

RayPlante is the current working group chair. The
RegistryWorkingGroup page gives an incomplete list of the members of the working group. Participants are encouraged to add themselves to the list. This makes it easier for making direct one-to-one contact with each other.

Design and Modeling
A new tiger team was formed to address some specific modeling issues related to services and applications. Two proposals have been prepared for review by the working group:
- RegDMServices: a proposal to change the way we describe data and services
- RegDMApplications: a proposal for describing both desktop and network-based applications.
- RegDMStandards: a proposal to describe standards themselves in the registry.

Astronomy Visualization Metadata (AVM)
The
OutreachMetadata page collects discussion related generally to outreach metadata and specifically to a standard in development for tagging graphics images intended for outreach with astronomical metadata.
Implementations
The
RegistryImplmentation page tracks IVOA efforts to coordinate the implementations of registry standards. If you maintain a registry, please consult this page for the latest roadmap and schedule for deploying interoperable registries.
